Emblems in Colonial Ibero-America sets out to present to an anglophone readership the rich corpus of emblematic material in the Viceroyalties of New Spain and Peru and in Portuguese America. The papers presented here explore the way in which European emblems circulated and were exploited, mostly in the context of elaborate visual programmes of applied or, as Leal prefers, displayed emblems, often in a religious setting. However the traffic was not all in one direction, and the volume also identifies the unique interaction between the colonial European genre and a pre-existing visual tradition.
