La fauconnerie a été une activité de rois, empereurs, émirs, khans, marchands et voyageurs pendant plus de 2000 ans. Elle a fourni des sujets en littérature et en art, et elle a été discutée dans des livres zoologiques, médicaux et juridiques. Les articles de ce volume sont issus d’un colloque tenu à la New York University à Abu Dhabi, et concernent la fauconnerie médiévale dans l’espace méditerranéen. Ceci inclut les traités sur les autours et les faucons, en Espagne, au Levant, à Byzance et dans le Moyen Orient arabe, et une comparaison entre les manuels européens et arabes. On y envisage la chasse au vol dans la poésie arabe, la littérature provençale et italienne, la poésie néo-latine, la peinture. Il y a place pour les prescrits légaux dans la loi juive, et pour les réalités concrètes : la diffusion de la fauconnerie de l’Asie centrale à l’Europe documentée par l’archéologie, la chasse au vol à la cour des Sforza de Milan et le commerce des très précieux gerfauts. Par ces éclairages ponctuels, la Méditerranée se révèle comme un espace perméable à des courants et des influences réciproques.
